Tenor sax vs alto sax

$800 would be a little bit high IMO. But iff if plays very well then it might be a great horn for you even at that price. The only thing I've had to deal with on my Amati was the springs breaking. They should all eventually be replaced I think. They are wonderful horns.

Tenor Sax Ratings

Very full sound. Good intonation. If you can deal with the vintage style pinky keys then it will be great.I've got lots of clips on Soundclick. I play my Amati tenor professionally about 25-30 hours a week with practicing, busking and gigs and rehearsals. It seems to hold adjustment ok other than the springs. I started out on an amati alto, and although functional it was nothing special.Personally, unless you have played this horn and fallen in love with it, I would leave your $800 in the bank and keep saving till you have $1500-2000 and can pick up a modern used pro level horn.

I never got the point of intermediate instruments to be honest. If you really need a replacement horn right now personally I would look at things like Jupiters or Antigua winds. You get modern ergonomics, decent built quality, decent intonation, and no real problem selling them on when you decide to step up again. But honestly, just save a bit longer. Basically.I agree with folks.$800 is a bit high. If it was $650, then quite honestly, if it is in solid, good playing shape, that would be a reasonable asking price. Perhaps you can talk him down a bit? They can be underrated, IMHO. I think Amatis are better horns than their rep.But I do not agree with Canadain above in that, if what you have is $800.you need to save another $700 to get a pro horn. You can get a pro-level vintage horn, arguably better than this Amati, for your $800.

Hell, there are lots of those. If you can scrape $1000, then you are really set to get something fab.No need to spend $1500. Not in this imploded economy. Maybe vintage, although based on my experience in Canada bargains are few and very far between.

Used prices in Canada tend to be, er, perhaps optimisitic is the kindest word to use, so the reality for me has been bringing my horns in from the US so exchange rate, shipping and import cost have to be factored in. Bare in mind local classified routinely are looking for $4-5k plus for modern Selmers.Just noticed the horn in question is rather tarnished looking silverplate. Isnt that going to be a PITA to clean up and keep clean?

Vintage

ALso the fact that it looks like crap makes me wonder how much care the original owner was taking of the horn? I know, I shouldnt judge it by its looks (god knows my horns looked better once upon a time too), but without playing it its kind of hard to say isnt it.
