The Chicago rapper/producer ’s 2016 mixtape, sought to empower listeners looking to conquer their personal, lifelong checklists. On it, he hurdled obstacles in pursuit of his rap dream, challenging everyone else to pursue their dreams too, no matter the cost. His first new song since his cousin was killed in Chicago, “There You Go,” is triumphant and teasing, illustrating the major strides he’s made toward his goal despite his doubters and personal losses.Saba co-produced “There You Go” with Daoud, and the warm production is gorgeous and lush, almost enveloping. The intro alone cushions softening trumpet blurts with watercolor synths. Surrounded by keyboard chords and clomping drums, Saba maneuvers joyfully through springing verses, celebrating his ascent from yearbook lame to “independent young black man.” This is a toast to growing up, and representing a city the right way.
